Rolex Cosmograph "Panda" Daytona — Reference 116500LN

The Daytona needs no introduction. What this reference did was make it accessible in a way the market had never seen — ceramic bezel, in-house movement, Oystersteel construction — and the result was one of the most sought-after references in modern watchmaking. The 116500LN became the standard by which every other sports chronograph is measured.

The white “Panda” dial is the definitive configuration. Black subsidiary registers against a white lacquer ground, with applied hour markers and a tachymetric scale on the black ceramic bezel. Every element of the dial is built for legibility under pressure, and the contrast holds up as well in a boardroom as it does at speed. Calibre 4130 inside — Rolex’s in-house chronograph movement, column wheel, vertical clutch, 72-hour power reserve. A movement that outperformed every ebauche-based chronograph the market had relied on before it.
